Sasha Bruce is on a mission to end youth homelessness! They provide safe homes, life skills, workforce development, and prevention services to more than 10,000 young people and their families each year.
Sasha Bruce’s emergency housing programs and drop-in centers have remained open throughout the pandemic, providing survival services and housing with supportive services for homeless youth. The pandemic continues to disproportionally impact our city’s most vulnerable residents, and they need your support.
Here is how you can help:
-
Help a young person move into their first home
Supplies are needed for housing programs as young people arrive with little or nothing. Visit their Amazon Wish List for the most up-to-date needs.
-
Volunteering at Sasha Bruce provides groups and individuals the opportunity to have a powerful and positive impact on the lives of young people and families in DC and Prince George’s County, MD. Both one-time experiences, such as helping to set up apartments and ongoing activities are available. There are opportunities in the spring and fall to work on gardening projects along with the Gorilla gardeners who train young people in landscaping skills.
-
We sponsor a holiday celebration dinner, by requesting volunteers to contribute a side dish for a home-cooked meal that we deliver in December.
-
We also sponsor birthday celebrations (Project Joy) at one of the Sasha Bruce residential programs. We provide birthday treats by baking or buying a cake or cupcakes for about 20 young people or for young mothers and their toddlers for about six months of the year and our members choose months that work best for them. Sign up by contacting the Sasha Bruce liaison, Molly Strauss (mmstrauss1@gmail.com), or Leigh Bailey, the Development Director (lbailey@sashabruce.org).
-
Providing a meal for the Drop in Center for 35-40 people experiencing homelessness is another greatly appreciated volunteer opportunity. Contact the organizer, Leigh Bailey, at lbailey@sashabruce.org and specify the Giving Together connection.

Another need:
Youth and young families in Sasha Bruce programs struggle to purchase food and basic household supplies. Some of those items are on their new Amazon Wishlist.
Similar items could be purchased anywhere and dropped off or shipped to the Administrative offices.
