This spring, as we all tried to navigate the uncharted waters of the COVID-19 emergency, it was a challenge to find things to celebrate. But thanks to those who generously contributed to GT’s emergency campaign, we're happy to report some very good news. The results of our online fundraiser are in and our efforts were a big success, amounting to over $77,000 to help local people in need!

Over a 10-day period, April 7-17, 2020, GT raised nearly $19,000 from 89 members, volunteers and friends. Add to that amount GT’s $10,000 match. In addition, two v...

On January 20, 2020 -- the annual Martin Luther King, Jr., Nationwide Day of Service -- Giving Together volunteers provided and served lunch to the 8 residents of Becky’s House. Becky’s House is one of the many programs sponsored by Interfaith Works, a prior GT grantee.

Becky's is a safe environment for eight senior, disabled women, many of whom have lived on the streets for decades with no place to go. The program provides case management and 24-hour staff, in order to improve the overall health and stability of these frail, higher-needs individuals. Each reside...

On November 19, 2019, GT conducted the first meeting of our new Strategic Planning initiative. The initiative is exploring how GT can improve its effectiveness and impact as we move into our second decade. President Emeritus Paula Norwood --  chair of the initiative -- welcomed more than 25 members and introduced the evening's moderator Lynn O'Connell. Lynn has an M.A. degree in philanthropy, with a focus on giving circles. She belongs to several, including Giving Together and Dining for Women, where she is national board chair. She got us thinking, and talking, about issues related to grant making, me...

For the 2020 grant cycle, members have voted to support needy women and families within the target group of immigrants and refugees.  Nonprofits that provide services to this population, including assistance with resettlement, housing, education and training, and legal and administrative services may be eligible to be considered for a GT grant.

Applications are considered by invitation only. Suggestions of such organizations that meet GT's regular grantee criteria (non-religious and non-political in nature, locally-based, in existence at least three years) are welcome and may be sent to the grant...

On Saturday, October 26, GT members gathered in PG County to build a play space for the kids of John H. Bayne Elementary School. We were joined by the families of Bayne students as well as people from the surrounding Capitol Heights community -- nearly 150 volunteers in all. Everyone was there to help build, paint and assemble. What a day!!!!

After nearly a year of planning and weeks of Monday morning conference calls among GT leaders, Bayne staff, the Bayne PTO and our KaBOOM! managers, it was hard to believe that we had finally reached Build Day. At 8 A.M. we started with breakfast -- arranged for an...

On Thursday, September 26, members gathered for GT’s 2019 Annual Meeting. President Karen Gilgoff provided a recap of activities throughout our 10th Anniversary year and announced new plans for GT’s future. She also welcomed members who joined since the last Annual Meeting: Nancy Altman, Nancy Donaldson, Amy Peck Abraham, Joanie Golden, Sandra Shorr, Lisa Stark, Nancy Ebb, Nedra Weinstein and Margot Zimmerman.

A big part of a packed agenda focused on our current grantees. We heard from Jen Stillerman, the Program Director for TARGET, the DC Volunteer Lawyers Project’s program for at-risk teen...

When Giving Together members decided to fund a KaBOOM! sports court in 2019 as a special 10th-anniversary project, we may not have guessed how much impact this could have. The fourth GT education event (“Sports, Play and Social Change”), on June 6 at KaBOOM!, provided some new lessons about “the serious benefits of having fun”. The informal seminar featured two speakers who described recent research and experiences confirming that opportunities for safe, diverse sports and playtimes are often lacking for low-income families and especially, for homeless children. Yet sports and playtime are essential to...

On the evening of April 30, Giving Together celebrated a decade of philanthropy with members, guests and grantees, turning our annual spring fundraiser into a big anniversary party.  The location was a flower-filled Chevy Chase Village Hall.  Colorful displays decorated the space, illustrating the work of GT’s 16 grantees – non-profits that provide outstanding services to our community.  A pianist played classic jazz while everyone dined on a sumptuous feast of skewered lamb and salmon, fresh Asian wraps, fruit and chocolate desserts. The conversation sparkled and so did the wine!...

On January 22, GT sponsored the third in our series of “Lunch & Learn” education programs. Nearly 20 members and guests enjoyed their own brown bag lunches while listening to speaker Amy Yontef-McGrath describe her remarkable year of community service.

Here’s how Amy described her amazing undertaking:

“As I approached my 50th birthday, I wanted to shake things up! Grateful for all that I have in my life, I sought something more. In the year between my 49th and 50th birthdays, I took on 50 service projects with 42 organizations serving needs within my own zip code and all the way to Uganda!

“These 50 ex...

On Monday, January 21, a team of Giving Together volunteers braved the frigid cold to help out at Nourish Now, a 2016 GT grantee organization in Rockville, MD, on the national Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. We joined millions of Americans engaging in volunteer activities all around the country.

Nourish Now helps people achieve food security in Montgomery County by efficiently re-
distributing surplus food from restaurants, caterers, and others to those in need. The organization’s dedicated staff and corps of volunteers do an outstanding job of helping to alleviate local hunger – a serious prob...
